The N.Y. Rangers have reached the Stanley Cup finals for the first time since 1994 by beating the Montreal Canadiens 1-0 last night at Madison Square Garden winning the series 4-2.Now all the sports talk radio guys, who barely gave hockey a mention during the season, are talking hockey and trying to act like they know what they’re talking about.Well they don’t.Example:Espn radio host Stephen A.Smith, whose expertise is the NBA,was talking about how he’s now rooting for the Rangers and showing them love and the last time they won the Cup was 1994 which is true.If he had stopped there everything would have been fine and hockey fans, including me,would think he knows something. But he didn’t stop there.Trying to show how much knowledge he thinks he has,he then says the time before ’94 was 40 years.Say what? Rangers fans especially, know that it was 54 years between cups because they won in 1940.I remember the taunting chant of 1940-1940.And his partner at espn Ryan Roucco didn’t bother to correct him which makes me think a: he is afraid to correct him or b: he didn’t know either. In any case it just shows when you’re talking about something that’s not your area of expertise, don’t say too much because you will be found out. That’s my opinion.
This is about New York City and the players who come here from other cities, get paid alot of money, then for some reason can’t play nearly as well as they did before.I have always said that it takes a special player to win in NY and a big reason is the pressure. They feel the pressure of living up to that money they’re making and many of them can’t handle it.Dave Winfield signed a huge contract with the Yankees in 1981.He proceeded to go 1 for 22 in the World Series that year and the Yankees lost to the Dodgers.Ed Whitson, who pitched for the Yankees in the 80’s got into a fight with manager Billy Martin for not showing any mental toughness when the crowd booed him.He subsequently was run out of town.I remember seeing Craig Morton, who was the Giants quarterback at the time, rail at the crowd because he was being booed. That brings me to the Mets who recently fired their hitting coach who’s name I can’t remember right now, sorry, and who’s players are upset about getting booed and the general negativity surrounding them. They signed Curtis Granderson, ex Yankee,to a big contract and so far he has not played nearly as well as he should be.But he is complaining about the booing also. Now on the other hand you have a Reggie Jackson who said “I’m the straw that stirs the drink ” and backed it up with 3 homers in the World Series.Mark Messier came to the Rangers for one reason,to win the Stanley Cup and he did it.These are special players and they came through. It takes guys like that to win in New York. That’s my opinion.
For those of you who are watching the Stanley Cup playoffs between the NY Rangers and the Montreal Canadiens, whether you’re a hard core fan or a casual observer, you are listening to,unquestionably, the best hockey announcer in America today in Mike(Doc)Emerick.I listened to him for years doing the New Jersey Devils games but before he came to New Jersey he did the Philadelphia Flyers games. He has a style that is unique in that, although he is on tv,he broadcasts games as if he was on the radio. He flows right along with the action and even though you’re watching on tv his radio style call doesn’t interfere and if you left to do something else for a few minutes you could turn up the sound and feel as if you were listening to the radio.Emerick also is informative and has a quick wit charm. He keeps his broadcast partner Eddie Olchyk in the game giving him time and space for his analysis. And when a great moment happens, like Martin St Louis game winning overtime goal in game 4,instead of Emerick doing the speaking,he lets the moment do the speaking. The great ones have that knack.Pat Summerall in football, old timers like Red Barber and Mel Allen in baseball.Vin Scully is another old timer still going strong today doing the Dodgers broadcast. There have been some great hockey broadcasters through the years.Gene Hart,Jiggs McDonald,Marv Albert but Mike (Doc)Emerick does not take a backseat to anyone. He is the best. That’s my opinion.
It’s Memorial Day friends and I would like to thank all the men and women who have served in our Armed Forces, including my brother Ellis who has passed away, for keeping this country free and safe, this is your day.It is also around this time when most baseball teams have reached the 50 game mark of the season.I have always maintained that you should wait until your team has played 50 games, then take a look at their record and determine whether they have a chance to win their division or make it as a wild card team.Since there are 162 games in a season you know after 50 games there are 112 games left to play.I’m a Yankees fan and right now they have a record of 26-23.I know that’s 49 games but stay with me here.If they win today’s game in St.Louis they’ll have 27 wins with 112 left to play. They would need to go 63-49 to get to 90 wins. That may not be enough to win the division but could be enough for the wild card. The San Francisco Giants,on the other hand, are 32-18 so if they go just 58-54 they will win 90 games. The defending champion Boston Red Sox are currently 20-29 so they would need to go 70-43 to get to 90.So look at where your team is at right now and figure out how many games they would need to win,ask yourself if,realistically, they can win that many games. If the answer is no,then your baseball season is already over and you can start looking forward to the football season. That’s my opinion.
Jim Irsay who owns the Indianapolis Colts of the National Football League was arrested on a charge of DUI and having prescription drugs in his possession that were not his.As of today there has been no kind of disciplinary action on the part of Commissioner Roger Goodell. He has said they need more information but Robert Mathis who is a player on the Colts was given a 4 game suspension for taking a fertility drug so he and his wife who was having fertility problems could conceive and have a baby. There seems to be a double standard here and I know people will say Mr. Goodell works for the owners and that is true.I heard an Espn personality say that as an employee he would not be as critical or take to task his boss as he would his coworkers. To that I say of course not because you have no power, you’re just an employee, but Mr.Goodell does have power. He is the highest ranking official in the NFL and he has the power to suspend or fine or do both.He has been very quick to fine and suspend players like Robert Mathis for any minor transgression but in this instance says he needs more information, meanwhile Mr Irsay at the recent NFL owners meeting was making a pitch to have the Super Bowl return to Indianapolis. Why is he there and allowed to do that? Former Baseball commissioner Fay Vincent suspended Yankee owner George Steinbrenner and NBA commissioner Adam Silver has fined and banned L.A.Clippers owner Donald Sterling for his racist comments. If commissioner Goodell doesn’t suspend Mr.Irsay before the season starts then something is very wrong and the question of is there a double standard will be legitimate. That’s my opinion.
Well friends we have another spoiled celebrity doing something stupid against the law and crying “but don’t you know who I am”. Who the hell do these people think they are? Alec Baldwin rides his bike the wrong way on 5th ave in Manhattan, gets stopped by the police, has no I.D. on him and tells the officer “don’t you know my taxes pay your salary” and “just give me the f–king summons”.He causes a crowd to gather because he’s acting like such an a–hole that he’s handcuffed and taken to the precinct. He starts chastising the supervisor and asks how old are the officers and says “they don’t even know who I am”. Well boohoo boohoo Mr Baldwin,Imagine that somebody actually doesn’t know you from next guy,How dare they not know.Lindsay Lohan pulled that same old tired bullcrap when she got nailed for allegedly smashing her car into a tree. These celebrities think just because they’re famous the same rules don’t apply to them, that they can do anything they want and get away with it.I’m sorry to say alot of times that is true and I have had my encounters with the NYPD and got a summons I didn’t deserve.I had to pay for something I didn’t do and this guy wants to get away with something he did do.He then takes to Twitter when he gets home and trashes the city.He once said he wanted to move back to California because he couldn’t stand living in New York any longer.I say why is he still here and when is he leaving?Good Riddance Mr Baldwin, you can’t leave soon enough to suit me.That’s my opinion.
