Yesterday Derek Jeter played the final game of his marvelous career.Last week I wrote about how I thought all the criticism he was receiving because of the gifts and adulation from other teams was unwarranted.Today I want to put these sabermetric zealots in their place. Before all this WAR (wins above replacement) and OPS (on base + slugging pct) crap took over baseball, there were 3 simple stats to determine how good a player was.Avg,homers, and Rbi’s.Derek Jeter finished with a .310 career avg.260 homers and over 1200 Rbi’s.He has played in the most postseason games ever and has the most hits, runs scored,Rbi’s and at bats.He finished with 3,465 hits which is 6th most all time.Out of 20 major league seasons he has missed the playoffs 3 times including this season. The moments he has provided in the playoffs like “the flip,” the first-ever homer in the World Series in November, the fall into the stands to catch a foul pop against the Oakland A’s,cannot be measured by sabermetrics. He will go down as one of the greatest winners in the history of Baseball with 5 world series chamionships. It is the end of an era that we will probably never see again.Farewell Captain, you were truly one of the greatest, sabermetrics be damned. That’s my opinion.
There has been alot of criticism of Derek Jeter lately and I don’t think it’s fair at all.People are finding fault with everything from the gifts he has received to the commercials he has done to him not having the Jeter type season they thought he would have.First of all,the gifts from other teams are in tribute to what he has meant to the game for twenty years. The way he’s carried himself and has respected the game and the other players. There’s no greater compliment than to have your peers talk about you with admiration and respect.Second, the commercials, especially the Nike one where everyone from Billy Chrystal to Michael Jordan tip their caps in tribute is one of the best ever.As for the season he’s having, what the hell do you expect from a forty year old player at what’s considered the most important position in the field. His stats are much better than many players who played as long.He has played almost a full season of postseason games and has hit over .300 with 20 homers and 200 hits.He has an on base pct.of 377 which is the best among the 1,500 players that have played shortstop. There was much talk about dropping him from batting second to sixth or seventh. The only problem with that thinking is the other guys in the Yankees lineup aren’t hitting either so who could they put in there? The criticism is unwarranted and silly.Derek Jeter deserves all the attention he is getting. All of Baseball and Yankee fans in particular will miss him when he’s gone. That’s my opinion.
What is going on with the National Football League. Now we have Adrian Peterson, star running back for the Minnesota Vikings, being indicted for allegedly taking a switch and beating his 4 year old son.We have Greg Hardy of the Carolina Panthers convicted of choking his girlfriend and threatening to kill her.We have Ray McDonald of the San Francisco 49ers accused of domestic abuse, and everyone knows about Ray Rice.As far as Peterson is concerned,I absolutely think a parent should dicipline a child and the idea of giving a time out or not letting them watch tv is the stupidest thing I have ever heard. That being said,I absolutely think many parents don’t understand the difference between dicipline and abuse. What Peterson did was definitely abuse. You don’t hit a child with a switch. He’s 4 years old and a couple of smacks on his behind with your hand would be enough for him to get the message. My parents used their hands and sometimes a belt on me and my brother and we got the message. It wasn’t abuse but it was effective.Too many parents today go way over the line when it comes to dicipline as did Adrian Peterson. There is nothing wrong with dicipline,it’s wrong when it’s used in a harmful manner.Adrian Peterson used it in a harmful manner. That’s my opinion.
Ray Rice, the Baltimore Ravens running back, has been suspended indefinitely by the NFL and had his contract terminated by the Ravens because of new video obtained by Tmz showing him punching his now wife Janay Palmer in an elevator in an Atlantic City casino. The question I have is Why couldn’t the league get hold of a tape that a celebrity gossip site, which Tmz is,was able to get? The NFL is a powerful sports business and they keep saying the tape was not made available by the police. Does anyone really believe that? I don’t.They didn’t bother to ask the casino, which Tmz did,and they didn’t bother to get it from Rice’s attorney who also had it.The Ravens are guilty of standing up for their player and teammate one minute and terminating his contract the next.I also believe that they could have gotten the tape if they truly wanted to find out what happened in that elevator. If not for this video Ray Rice would only be serving a two game suspension by the league and would have been welcomed back by the team. This smells of a coverup by both the NFL and the Ravens.Due diligence was not done by either and the public outcry was worse this time than it was previously when all anyone saw was Rice dragging Palmer out of the elevator.Everyone knew something happened but they didn’t know exactly what. Now we do.Janay Palmer was punched in the face. The NFL and the Baltimore Ravens are not making themselves available to answer for this.Seems like they’re hiding. They won’t get away. They shouldn’t be allowed to either. That’s my opinion.
Well friends, the football season kicks off tomorrow with the Green Bay Packers going to Seattle to play the defending Super Bowl Champion Seahawks.By now you’ve probably heard every so called expert in captivity give their prediction on what your particular team will do.If you have been following my blog you know I said in baseball you wait until the first 50 games to get a feel for what your team will do.Not so in football.Every game is extremely important because the season is only 16 games.I’m a Giants fan and I’ve heard nothing but negativity about their new offensive system and how they won’t be any good. What have you heard about your team ? Is your team supposed to be a Super Bowl contender,a playoff team or are they just playing the season to see how high a draft choice they’re going to get? Will announcers like Phil Simms and Tony Dungy follow through with their stance that they will not say Washington Redskins? What team will be a surprise to everyone?Which team will suffer a season ending injury to one of their best best players and change how their season winds up? That’s the great thing football creates that the other sports can’t.Every game, every play means so much. You are constantly in anxiety about whether your team will win or lose. And since most of the games are on Sunday, your working Monday or school Monday will be affected positively or negatively.I went through many years of Monday’s after effects depending on how the Giants did on Sunday. So everyone get ready because you are in for quite a ride. That’s my opinion.
