Super Bowl XLIX between the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks is shaping up to be a game that, outside of the two cities they represent,no one wants to see them win.You know by now all about deflategate, unless you have been to the moon recently, and the Seahawks Marshawn Lynch refuses to speak except to say “I’m here so I don’t get fined”and “you know why I’m here”.Patriots owner Robert Kraft has emphatically stated that unless the NFL can prove that his team deliberately deflated the footballs in the AFC championship game he wants an apology. Is he kidding? They were caught videotaping other teams practices which became known as spygate. Now the biggest game of the year is taking a back seat because his team is again involved in a possible cheating scandal. And all this talk about atmosphere deflating the balls,I want to know why the atmosphere didn’t deflate the Colts balls also. The Seahawks all-pro cornerback Richard Sherman said the Patriots won’t be punished because Commissioner Roger Goodell has a close friendship with Kraft. He and his other teammates have provided plenty of comments for the media.Lynch on the hand has been openly defiant and refused to speak except to issue his one liners.Yet he has done a commercial for Progressive Insurance with Espn anchor Kenny Mane. It’s been said he’s not comfortable talking to the media and answering questions but I don’t buy that.As far as I’m concerned Sunday can’t come fast enough so we can get this game over and forget about these teams. One of them will be crowned Super Bowl Champion.Unfortunately.That’s my opinion.
I don’t understand why the New England Patriots keep having the air of suspicion and accusations of cheating surrounding them. We’ve already had spygate and now we have what’s being called deflategate. If you don’t know by now,the Patriots are being accused of deflating their footballs in the AFC championship game against the Indianapolis Colts which they won 45-7.While most everyone believes the deflation of the balls had no effect on the outcome, the Patriots were clearly the better team, the idea of doing something like that to gain an advantage is unethical and unsportsmanlike to say the least. It’s been reported that 11 of the 12 footballs used in the game were deflated by a fairly significant amount. The referee checks the balls before the game and again at halftime. If the balls are not up to regulation the ref will inflate the balls to meet the standard.Obviously someone did something to the balls. The Patriots were guilty of videotaping other teams practices, spying if you will, hence the term spygate. They paid a very heavy fine and tainted their 3 Super Bowl victories. They haven’t won a Super Bowl since, having lost to the Giants twice, once when they were undefeated and staking a claim to being the greatest team ever. Many believe they need to win this Super Bowl to validate the other three. Now this is hanging over them like a dark cloud. The NFL is doing an investigation at this point and if it’s determined that the Patriots did deflate these balls, their legacy is going to be that of cheaters instead of champions.
The New York Knicks are currently 5-35 and undoundoubtedly one of the worst teams in the NBA along with the Minnesota Timberwolves. They could be historically the worst in NBA annals if they don’t win at least 10 games this season. The current record of futility is held by the 1972 Philadelphia 76ers at 9-73.Everyone in the media is blaming team president Phil Jackson and while I do think he deserves much of the criticism, people who think he’s not fully invested and he’s just going to take the money (60 million for 5 yrs) and head back to L.A.I think is a lot of bull.First of all Phil Jackson is a proud man and he is not going to take on a challenge like this and then bail.Second he is a former Knicks player who was on both of their Championship teams in ’70 and ’73.He wants to see the Knicks become contenders again and I believe that he will accomplish that.I also don’t buy people saying that this rebuilding is going to take a long long time to complete. The Knicks have a good chance of ending up with the top pick in the draft and they also have plenty of money under the salary cap to get a very good player to go with Carmelo Anthony. What they will have to do is find good players who can fit the triangle offense they want to run.Whether those players are from college or from Europe, the scouts must do their jobs and find these players. It’s up to Jackson to evaluate the talent and he must make the right decisions. He has 11 championship rings as a coach and this is new territory for him actually running a team but he knows talent and it won’t be long before the Knicks are once again a title contender. That’s my opinion.
The 2015 MLB Hall of Fame class has been announced.Pitchers Randy Johnson,Pedro Martinez and John Smoltz along with inf.of.Craig Biggio will be inducted into Cooperstown this summer and each one of them is deserving of the honor. While I think it’s ridiculous that Mike Piazza didn’t make it,again, because of suspicion he used PED’S (performance enhancing drugs),my real gripe with the writers who vote for this award is the idiotic votes they cast for reasons like wanting to “make a statement” or just to be different.I have a statement to make to them “you should have your vote taken away permanently”.Dan Lebetard, who’s a Miami newspaper writer and has a show on Espn called “Highly Questionable”,had his vote taken away last year because he gave it to fans to vote in his stead. One writer voted for Darin Erstad whose Major League career consisted of 913 runs scored,1,697 hits,124 homers and 699 rbi.By what criteria would anyone consider those Hall of Fame numbers.Aaron Boone, whose greatest moment was hitting the pennant clinching home run for the Yankees against the Red Sox in 2003 received two votes.Wait there’s more.A writer from Cleveland said he didn’t vote for Martinez because he thought he acted like a punk on the mound by throwing at batters and because in 1999 Martinez came into a playoff game against the Indians from the bullpen and proceeded to shut the Indians down and put the Red Sox into the ALCS against the Yankees. These are people who vote on the most prestigious award in Baseball. They should not be allowed to do that anymore. That’s my opinion.
